***Pretty easy going 17km Guildford circular via interesting Guildford castle, Arts-&-Crafts Watt's chapel and St Catherine's chaper ruinsHello Muddy Hikers :-)
You are invited on this wonderful hike through Guildford and Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
On this hike we will visit the following beautiful places:
Guildford Castle
Built by William the Conqueror, or one of his barons, shortly after the Norman invasion of England in 1066. Used as a Royal Palace, a prison and a private residence, Guildford Castle and grounds was sold to the Guildford Corporation in 1885. The grounds at Guildford Castle opened as public gardens in 1888 to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.
The castle gardens are famous for their vibrant floral displays, centred on the 11th Century Castle Keep. Other attractions include a life-size statue of Alice Through the Looking Glass and a bowling green.
River Wey Navigation - canal walk heading out of Guildford
St Catherine's Chapel Ruins
The chapel was established in the early 14th century by Richard de Wauncey to provide a more convenient place of worship for those who lived some distance away from the main church of St Nicholas, Guildford
Watts Cemetery Chapel
This unique Grade I-listed terracotta building is the work of artist and designer Mary Watts. Over 70 people from the local community helped her create it between 1895 and 1904. It opened in 1898 and remains a working chapel to this day.
Clay tiles decorate the outside. They blend Celtic, Romanesque, and Art Nouveau influences. Inside the Chapel you will find one of the most important and experimental wall paintings in England.
