A 10 mile scenic but hilly route packed with stunning spots of Bluebells in Blackheath and Chantries, passing Chilworth Vineyard and Alpacas, and a horse blessing tradition on hill-top St. Marthas Church.This group hike is worth the hills as the Bluebells are magical. Guided by Blackheath resident Simone, showing you the stunning hidden bluebells trails in Blackheath Forest in Surrey.
The heathland is crossed with many sandy paths and magestic pine forest and only the locals know where the best bluebells grow..
We’ll continue walking to Chilworth Vineyards and through the Gunpowder mills to reach the ancient woodland of Chantries and its immense carpets of bluebells.
Whilst walking up to St. Martha’s Church on the hill we might encounter many horses, trekking up for the traditional ‘Horseman’s Sunday’ .
During this event, local horse riders can ride their horese up to St. Martha’s church to await their blessing at 2pm.
Most riders like to be smartly dressed, and this makes for a perfect picture up on the hill.
A diverse array of riders, horses and ponies take part, with the treat of enjoying the perfect view atop St Martha’s Hill.
We will remain for short while to witness this event.
After this, we will walk downwards back into the village of Blackheath.
Difficulty: Moderate/hilly, due to several climbs and rocky and rough terrain
Duration: 4.5-5h
Bring: Money for snacks/drink on St.Marthas Church
Facilities: None (possible Percy Arms Pub with a detour)
