The 5th Annual “Stoneman’s Raid” living history at The Rowan Museum. On April 12, 1865, General Stoneman arrived in Salisbury with a few thousand Union Calvary men and pushed the inferior in numbers Confederate defenders from Grant’s Creek. As the federals made their way through town, by 9:30am the center of town was secure. As the occupation of the town continued throughout the afternoon; orders were given to burn anything of use to the confederate government i.e. buildings and supplies. As the story goes, The Rowan Courthouse was spared due to fraternal bonds. Following the occupation of Salisbury, the federal troops attempted to destroy the railroad bridge over the Yadkin but were unable due to entrenched confederates on a high hill.
