About this Event

The 15th Annual Kenneth Austin Rheumatology Symposium (KARS) at Howard University Hospital will be held on April 3, 2021 from 7:00 am to 1:40 pm. This annual activity is made available to regional doctors, nurses, and physician assistants interested in advancing their knowledge of common rheumatic conditions.

In accordance with institutional and district COVID-19 guidelines and regulations, KARS lectures and demonstrations will be offered using a hybrid format, with options to attend both in person (max. 50 seats) and virtually (unlimited).

The District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia are home to an immensely diverse population. We believe that by educating those who treat minority patients, we can help reduce ethnic disparities in rheumatic diseases and improve access to state-of-the-art therapies. We are very happy to host guest speakers from renowned hospitals and medical colleges in this year’s program to discuss the following topics:

- Diagnosis and management of Hidradenitis Suppurativa

- Rheumatic complications of treatment with checkpoint inhibitors

- The burden of disease in any lupus patient

- The impact of urate disease in patients with and without metabolic syndrome

- The various presentations of Axial Spondyloarthritis

- The differentials of and approach to abnormal hand imaging
