Who is Runoko Rashidi?
A distinguished anthropologist and historian, who passed away in 2021.
Known for his groundbreaking work on the Global African Presence, Rashidi dedicated his life to uncovering the rich history and cultural contributions of Africans worldwide, both before and after the era of enslavement.
A prolific author, Rashidi penned over twenty-two books, including notable works such as My Global Journeys in Search of the African Presence, Assata-Garvey and Me: A Global African Journey for Children, and The Black Image in Antiquity. His research delved deep into the African presence in early Europe and Asia, as evidenced in his books Black Star: The African Presence in Early Europe and African Star over Asia: The Black Presence in the East. He also co-edited African Presence in Early Asia with the esteemed Dr. Ivan Van Sertima.
As a dedicated scholar and traveler, Rashidi visited 124 countries and lectured in 67. He collaborated with eminent figures such as Ivan Van Sertima, John Henrik Clarke, Asa G. Hilliard, Edward Scobie, John G. Jackson, Jan Carew, and Yosef ben-Jochannan.
Rashidi’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of scholars and activists. His groundbreaking research and tireless advocacy for African history and culture have left an enduring impact on the world.
