This event will primarily focus on fleece tie blankets - they're easy and fun to make! You are welcome to bring any NEW handmade blankets you have made or if you would like to do a different type of blanket, feel free. We will also have some volunteers bringing their sewing machines to help sew on the official Project Linus tags. If you are a sewer, and would like to help out? We'd love to have you help in that aspect, too!You are encouraged to bring some NEW PRE-CUT fleece to help make blankets with. The minimum is 1.5 yards per piece and you need TWO pieces. Again, please have them pre-cut. Typically a solid colored bottom piece and a matching fun print for the top. These blankets are for all age ranges so any designs are welcome. The only thing that's not allowed is that super cozy soft fleece - it makes a mess when cutting. The best type is called "no pill". You can find fleece at Walmart, JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, lots of places! Some even have kits you can purchase.
Bring a snack to share if you're able, a pair of scissors if you can (we'll label them so you get them back if they get moved around), a bring a friend or four! Food might not be labeled so if you have allergies, be responsible for your own food allergies and don't eat anything you're not sure the ingredients of. It's a potluck!
Children are more than welcome as long as they are 100% supervised by an adult at all times. No running around or eating food and then touching blankets since these go directly to children in need (this goes for adults too!). We will have scissors going, things getting cut and tied everywhere and the last thing we need are any injuries. By joining us, you're accepting liability for yourself and your minor children.
FOOD: Only allowed at designated tables. Do not have food at blanket making tables. These blankets get their official Project Linus tag sewn on at the event and delivered directly to where they are going. So no sticky messy fingers from kids, or adults! :) Wash or wipe your hands off after eating and going back to a blanket making table.
Project Linus is a nationally recognized non-profit with a local chapter that serves Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Waterloo area. All of the blankets are handmade and stay here locally to children in need. They go to different facilities and hospitals like four oaks, shelters, University of Iowa children's hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Covenant and Waterloo etc.
If you can't make it to the event and would like to make a blanket ahead of time, you can drop it off anytime. Get in contact with me and you can drop it off at my house on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. If you'd like to donate fleece you can drop that off ahead of time with me or drop it off the day of the event, too.
Any questions? Just ask! We are beyond grateful to be back in this welcoming warm space at Salem United Methodist Church and can't wait to see you all again!
