This course will take place in Room 2F02 of the Dalhousie Building, Old Hawkhill, Dundee.
This five-week course will explain how to research your relative’s service in the Great War including service in the Army, Navy and RAF. It will look at the service of dominion and imperial forces as well as the role of women both in military service and as nurses and
VAD’s. It will examine how entry into military service changed from volunteering to conscription, the role of tribunals, conscientious objectors.
It is often forgotten the impact of the Great War on the Home Front was enormous, so the course will examine the impact of the war on those not serving in the armed forces.
Was it really a land fit for heroes at the war’s ending.
Week one
How to research officers' and other ranks' army service in the Great War using medal cards, medal rolls, pension records, service records, war Diaries, CWGC records, newspapers and other sources.
Week two
How to research service in the Royal Navy, Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force.
Week three
Researching Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and American service personnel in the Great War.
Week four
How to research women’s service in the Great War including nurses, vads and QMAAC. Volunteering and conscription. Tribunals – conscientious objectors.
Week five
The Home Front – looking at the impact of the Great War on the civilian population including DORA, internment, rent strikes and rationing.
Tutor : Ken Nisbet
Ken Nisbet has been involved in family history research for over 40 years and is currently Secretary of the Scottish Genealogy Society and the Scottish Association of Family History Societies. He has been a member of the Scotland’s Family History Centre User Group since its inception. He is the resident expert on Scottish Ancestral Records Podcasts and does talks to many of Scotland’s Family History Societies. Through the Scottish Genealogy Society, he has had published a Roll of Honour for Nairnshire 1914-1921, and a History of 2nd Battalion 78th Foot 1804-1816.
