This month we feature Bertha Vazquez of the Center for Inquiry's Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science.
Before 1800, half of all children died before their fifth birthday. Disease, infection, and poor sanitation made early death an ordinary part of life. Then, over the next two centuries, humanity experienced one of the greatest transformations in history.
From vaccines and clean water to antiseptics and antibiotics, science helped turn medicine from a world of “bleeding and purging” into an evidence-based system that dramatically increased both lifespan and quality of life. Today, many of these advances feel so normal that we rarely stop to appreciate how recent—and how extraordinary—they truly are.
Join us for a fascinating journey through 220 years of scientific progress, human ingenuity, and the discoveries that changed what it means to survive and thrive. 🌍🔬💉
About the Speaker:
Bertha Vazquez is a retired middle school science teacher and Education Director at the Center for Inquiry. She leads a network of 100 teachers who have delivered more than 475 professional development sessions across all 50 U.S. states.

Bertha is the editor of On Teaching Evolution (2021), co-author of What Teachers Want to Know About Teaching Climate Change (2025), and recipient of the 2023 Friend of Darwin Award. To help with expenses for this event, we suggest a per-person donation for those not already supporting with a recurring monthly donation. That's $5 for local speakers and $10 for out-of-area speakers.

CFFC Educational Events are free and open to the public. Enjoy thought-provoking speakers, local freethought news, state/church activism, volunteer opportunities, and socializing. Come out to meet old friends and make new ones. Coffee and water will be available with snacks served during the social hour after the meeting so plan to stay a while.
CFFC has no membership dues, but we do have recurring expenses that keep the organization running. The largest expense are these monthly meetings (venue, equipment, speaker fees, travel, etc.).
If you share our values, care about the work we do, and find yourself able to contribute, here's a link for you. We love our monthly donors! www.cflfreethought.org/cfldonate
