??What to expect??
The historic Lakewood Cemetery is an incredible cemetery with beautiful buildings, landscaping, and of course, monuments.
**Remember one stipulation of sketching here is that specific monument drawings are not be used for commercial purposes, as the monuments themselves are the properties of families and individuals.**
The mausoleums ARE open, and are not only equipped with restrooms, but are extraordinary spaces themselves, with fully furnished reception areas.
The chapels will be available during Fall Colors event so if you get a chance to see the stained glass windows and mosaics do so. As always, exercise respect for the spaces and other visitors.
For the 2:50pm wrap-up, we will meet at the modernist Lakewood Garden Mausoleum. This is the first mausoleum inside the main entrance (@Hennepin & 36th) after turning right. Restrooms at the Garden Mausoleum are on the main floor, as are drinking fountains. The crypt is in the basement.
**If the weather is wet, perhaps consider sketching the views from the warmth of the Garden Mausoleum**
Wear comfortable shoes, or more likely, prepare to drive about. (To walk the entire cemetery would take approx. 3 hours just by itself.)
You can park anywhere on the paved roads. If you have one, you'll want to bring a portable chair for yourself & maybe a blanket for your legs. Very importantly wear weather-appropriate layers.
***Please note, bikers: bicycles are NOT allowed in the cemetery.***
Those who live far away or can't make it that day are encouraged to visit a historic cemetery near you and share your drawings with us!
