Dreaming TransUtopia: An Artist-Activist Dialogue with Shu Lea Cheang and Yo-Ling Chen

The 2020s are increasingly becoming a decade defined by coordinated anti-trans repression at a global scale. How are gender expansive people and communities navigating these times of heightened political precarity on both sides of the Pacific in Taiwan and the United States? What can art and activism do for dreaming trans utopias during such times?
This transnational artist-activist dialogue brings together Taiwanese-American multi-media artist Shu Lea Cheang (鄭淑麗) with Taiwanese-American trans activist Yo-Ling Chen (陳有靈) to explore these questions.
This dialogue will preview Cheang’s forthcoming exhibition at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York City, LOVER LOVE—a large-scale interactive video installation centered on how intergenerational trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming performers in the United States are navigating agency, survival, and intimacy in a time of heightened political precarity. Cheang will also share about their collaborative theater performance project with Truku artist Dondon Hounwn (東冬・侯溫), Hagay Dreaming, which explores technoshamanism and Gaya principles in the context of Indigenous gender expansive embodiments and dreamstates in Taiwan. Hagay Dreaming had its world premier at Tate Modern’s 2025 Dance Reflections Festival in London, and will premiere in Taiwan at the Taipei Performing Arts Center in May of this year.
This dialogue will also touch on Yo-Ling Chen’s engaged research as the lead-PI of the Transpacific Taiwan Transgender Studies Research Collective (3TS) on how the global anti-gender movement has impacted Taiwan’s transgender movement and Taiwanese trans diaspora communities. Drawing on their experience as a trans nonbinary activist and freelance journalist based in Taipei since 2020, Yo-Ling will share about the current situation of transgender activism in Taiwan, as well as preview upcoming public 3TS activities.
