Inner Forest : Sungmi Ha Solo Exhibition
“Within time that belongs only to myself, I find space for repair, and recover a sense of calm and warmth.” Inner Forest presents Korean ceramic sculptor Sungmi Ha’s quiet reflection on pause, rest, and inner growth amid the haste and noise of everyday life. Rather than depicting nature as a tangible landscape, her work evokes an inward, contemplative realm—one that emerges as the world gradually recedes, allowing us to slow our steps, soften our breathing, and reconnect with the rhythm of emotional flow.
Through her practice, Sungmi continually turns inward, exploring the possibilities of slowing the heart and mind. Her works often center on themes of healing, taking shape as figures that merge animals, plants, natural elements, and the human form. Rendered with delicate underglaze techniques, these gentle presences convey a sense of quiet steadiness, as if capable of unconditionally receiving and understanding emotion, becoming intimate companions through moments of inner fluctuation. She also invites viewers, through unhurried contemplation, to awaken their own capacity for self-restoration and to re-enter a dialogue with the self. When we allow ourselves to fall out of sync with the world, we may rediscover—within this inner forest—a renewed sense of balance, softness, and wholeness of being.
Sungmi Ha
Sungmi Ha was born in 1983 and graduated from the Department of Crafts at Konkuk University and the Ceramic Arts Research Institute at Hongik University in South Korea. Specializing in expressing herself through ceramic art, her works are often vibrant and whimsical, radiating warmth and sincerity. She has had residencies in Japan, Finland, Taiwan, and the European Ceramic Work Centre in the Netherlands. In 2007, she was awarded the Special Judges Prize at the Hagi International Ceramic Competition in Japan.
