What ensues is an unravelling web of complicity and past trauma as he recruits previous fellow prisoners of the Iranian authorities to help validate the man’s identity as the notoriously sadistic torturer.
Filmed secretly in Iran due to Panahi’s ban from making films in his home country, this deeply personal and politically fraught drama has won countless awards this year, including the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
