Art is a multi-award-winning play written by French playwright Yasmina Reza. The English translation opened in the West End in 1996, winning the 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. It ran for eight years. It opened on Broadway in 1998, winning the Tony Award for Best Play. It then came back to the West End in 2016 to the Old Vic and has since also appeared on Broadway and most recently toured across the UK and USA.
Art is a modern dark comedy about three men who have been friends for 15 years. Serge has bought a modern painting for a huge sum of money. Marc hates it and cannot believe that a friend of his could want such a work. Yvan attempts, unsuccessfully, to placate both sides. If your friendship is based on tacit mutual agreement, what happens when one person does something completely different and unexpected?
This play really highlights the bond of friendship between the three men; they are all lead roles as they each have monologues and duologues throughout the 90 minutes. Looking at how the actors take on the emotions and connect is key to the production. Rehearsals will be held on a weeknight and on Sundays. Please get in touch with the director, Lauren, at [email protected] to register your interest and if you have any questions.
Character Breakdown:
Serge- a successful dermatologist who is passionate and knowledgeable about modern art, though he can come off as cold and pretentious.
Marc- an aeronautical engineer; judgmental and intransigent, he can come across as overbearing and arrogant.
