PIZZICA dance workshop - tarantella of South Italy🗓 Wednesday 27 May
🕗 5-7 pm dance
📌 Kafe Biblio, Herakleion
Pizzica is one of southern Italy's most beautiful tarantellas, with a rhythm absolutely peculiar, since it is said that it resonates with the heartbeat. Its origins are very ancient and full of charm: one of its forms was used as a cure until the 60s, through the therapeutic use of music, colors and dance, in a universe of symbols whose roots are found in Ancient Greece. Today it is danced in pairs, but it can also be danced individually, at parties and concerts; the cardiac rhythm of the drum transports the steps into a choreographic ritual in which it is almost impossible to remain still, while the melodies bring you back into a vortex that leads you to abandon the senses.
Together, we'll explore dance symbols, learn basic steps, arm movements, dance solo and in pairs.
Suitable for all ages (each person adapts their rhythm to the dance), open level, open to all genders.
Held in English.
TEACHER BIO
Paola is an Italian who happily moved to Crete several years ago. She has been dancing since she was a child, dedicating her studies to pizzica and delving into "tarantism" (the therapeutic form of this dance used in ancient times). She is fascinated by its symbolism, its ancient Greek origins, and its constant ability to transport us, through its beat and the captivating melodies of its music, to a state of liberation and harmony.
