About this Event

On April 24, Kvartira will host the presentation of the long-awaited book by Miloslav Chemodanov entitled Normal Boy.

This is a very rare example of a Russian-language autobiography by a queer person, set against the backdrop of contemporary Russian legislation that bans so-called “gay propaganda” and equates members of the LGBTQ community with extremists.

Here is what another well-known Russian LGBTQ activist, Karen Shainyan, says about Miloslav’s book:

This is a live broadcast from times that have hardly ever been described from a gay perspective. The author’s childhood coincided with the collapse of the USSR, while his youth and adulthood fell on a period that, for us ‘normal boys,’ was freer than anything that came before it in Russia — and, so far, freer than anything that has come after. At the same time, the text is written in such a way that people of very different ages, orientations, and genders will be able to recognize their own past in it and, if they’re lucky, understand it a little better.”
