Join us for a virtual artist panel discussion where WMG's Program Coordinator, Corinne Pompéy, will moderate a discussion about all things contemporary motherhood with juror Kiki McGrath and exhibiting artists: Emily Mayo, Kim Potowski, Schetauna Powell, and Rhonda Urdang. They will share insights on their creative practices, personal experiences, and the evolving representations of motherhood and caregiving in art. KIKI MCGRATH (she/her) is an artist based in Chicago, Illinois. Her installations and collaborative performances explore the overlapping edges of ritual, labor, and social history. Selected exhibitions include ‘Anchorhold’ in the National Cathedral in Washington DC, ‘Polishing the Glass Ceiling’ in the Chicago Cultural Center, and ‘Art in Odd Places’ in New York City. EMILY MAYO'S work explores themes of compassion, holiness, redemption. Drawing from her spiritual upbringing and personal life experiences, her projects reframe historical imagery within contemporary contexts. Her pieces have been showcased in exhibitions around the U.S. Her work has been featured in several publications including the 13th Manifest INDA, ArtMaze Magazine in London, and three drawing instructional books. She has participated in several artist residencies including a full fellowship to Vermont Studio Center. Emily Mayo received an MFA in Drawing from Kendall College of Art and Design in 2018. She is Co-Director of Hammerspace Gallery and Artist Cohort, a new space in Wyoming, MI dedicated to fostering a community for artist parents. She is also Professor of Drawing and Gallery Preparator at Hope College in Holland, MI. She runs her artistic practice out of her studio at Hope College and exhibits her work nationally. She lives in Wyoming, MI with her husband and two young boys.
SCHETAUNA POWELL Born 1989 in Houston, Texas, Schetauna Powell academic career has evolved to include a BA in English Literature, an MA in African American Studies, and an MFA in Designed Objects. Powell has prossional experience as a teaching artist at the Museum of Fine Art Houston, as an organizer for the Black Speculative Art Movement, and is currently the 2024 - 2027 Daniel and Ada Rice Curatorial Fellow in Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago. Powell’s investigation of the material and built environment focuses on building infrastructure that supports the pedagogy and performance of collaborative design. As a designer, Powell’s work is known for translating geometric pattern design to explore the symbolic, logical-mathematical aspects of African American literature and language.
KIM POTOWSKI works in photography and mixed media. Her work has been shown at the Afri-Caribe Cultural Center, Woman Made Gallery, and at the Alliance for the Study of Adoption and Culture. Her forthcoming solo show, “Oaxaca Firme” (UNAM Chicago, April 8-25, 2025) features images from southern Mexico made over the past 15 years. She has been a linguistics professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago since 1999.
RHONDA URDANG (b. NE) is an interdisciplinary artist who has largely been inspired by the intersectional feminist and peace movements. She has had a varied and interesting career; she has worked as a typesetter, museum gallery attendant, apprentice dot etcher, journeyman color separation artist and re-toucher on high-fashion catalogs in the graphic arts industry in Omaha and in Phoenix. Since leaving academia, the patriarchy and pseudoscience behind, her ingenuity has flourished. Rhonda has been interested in making contemporary art that challenges the narrative since founding Flagstaff Feminist Art Studio. Her thought-provoking works have been exhibited widely in local, regional, national, and international shows in 41 states. Her experimental approach has earned many awards. She has lived in Northern Arizona spanning four decades where stargazing has become a crucial aspect of her world on the Colorado Plateau.
