Hand-drumming has become a passion of mine - and an outlet to channel my emotions - over the past few months, and I'm very excited to bring it home to quirky (yet loveable) little Maynard! My comrade Eliot Prisby, the owner of Metrowest Kung Fu, is allowing us to use his kwoon/guan, so let's treat it with respect by taking off our street shoes upon entering, and helping to clean up once the drum circle ends.
Dave Curry, my hand drumming teacher and drum circle leader-extraordinaire, is helping to facilitate this inaugural drum circle, and I am very grateful for his support and encouragement.
Now for the details!
● The MDC is a freestyle drum & dance event. No hand-drum or dance experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome!
● At $5 per adult, it's cheaper than a movie and more entertaining too, plus you will leave feeling fantastic for the rest of the day! Kids 12 and under are free, but require adult supervision. Accepted forms of payment are cash, Venmo and PayPal - all the proceeds will go to Dave and Eliot.
● There is ample street parking, as well as the "basin" parking lot flanked by Summer, Nason and Main Steeets. Since it's a Sunday, parking is free.
● Dave will bring extra djembes, frame drums, and other percussive instruments (maracas/shakers, tambourines, LP jam blocks, etc.) for anyone who needs to borrow, but you're encouraged to bring your own if you have them. Didgeridoos and Native American flutes are also welcome.
● Several folding chairs and stools will be available, but you may want to bring your own for maximum comfort.
● Drumming will occur from 2:15-3:45pm, with a short social/snack break in the middle. You can arrive at any time (once doors open at 2pm) and leave when you must.
● Water and snacks will be provided, though you are welcome to bring something to share if you'd like. I will also be bringing an extra special treat to celebrate this inaugural MDC!
Let's get a really great turnout to this event, so please invite anyone (on or off Facebook) who you think would want to participate! RSVPs are encouraged so that we have a rough idea of how many people are coming...and how much food to get. 😁
I'd love to see this become a monthly event on Sunday afternoons, when there are no competing drum circles...so stay tuned for that! A successful inaugural MDC will certainly help with that endeavor.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me (MaynardDrumCircle at gmail dot com), Dave, or Eliot with any questions, and we hope to see lots of you at the inaugural MDC! 🪘🪘🪘
Thanks!
~Betsey
P.S. A huge shout out to my friend Holly for the *awesome* logo! Thank you so much!
