We are happy to announce that we got approval from the great folks at Rothrock State Forest! This marks the third year of The Chromosome Vertical Challenge, an annual event focused on fun, community, and fitness gains. Whether youβre here to push your limits or just enjoy a fun day suffering with friends, this is a great opportunity to test your climbing legs and embrace the challenge of climbing four of the steepest trails in Rothrock State Forest.
The entire chromosome course is 14.69 miles and just under 5,000 feet according to Strava. Completing the entire chromosome is optional.
This is a free event!
Weβll park at the first pavilion on the right and begin the run at the Alan Seeger Natural Area, taking Johnson Trail, also known as the Greenwood Spur, to the Firetower. Traditionally, the route follows:
Down Ross Trail to Stone Creek Road, then back up to the Firetower
Ruff Gap Trail to Spencer Trail, then climb back up to the Firetower
Descend the Greenwood Spur to Spencer Trail, then climb back up to the Firetower
Final descent will be back to where we started at the Alan Seeger Natural Area
As in past years, the lovely Meg Rush will be stationed near the tower in case anyone wants to drop their pack, food or needs first aid.
Some food and water will be provided, but bringing extra is always a good idea.

This year we will be accepting donations. All proceeds will go to the Standing Stone Trail. The Standing Stone Trail is the association that oversees and maintains the Standing Stone Trail. If you use these trails and are not a member, I urge you to join.
