〈Monopoly and Her Elephant-Dancing Apartments〉
Young people born in the 1990s often carry a distinctive self-deprecating humor. They call themselves “strawberry generation,” listen to songs like They Say I’m a Useless Youngster, and joke about their supposed fragility—while, in reality, they continue to chase their dreams with all their remaining strength, unwilling to admit how much they are still struggling. Huang Zi-yu is one of them: an artist who loves to draw and collect houses, yet openly mocks the fact that she cannot afford even one. Out of this mixture of irony and quiet frustration, the exhibition Real-Estate Tycoon was born—transforming self-mockery and life’s powerlessness into a lighthearted game.
The idea of “Monopoly” comes from the classic board game we all know, where players buy, rent, and trade properties in hopes of becoming the last one standing—a symbolic tool of possession and the fantasy of “life’s winners.” Yet Huang Zi-yu’s version of Real-Estate Tycoon unfolds only within her visual experience. She yields to the weeds growing in a corner, the couple eating by the roadside, the car parked before a doorway, or a quiet dead-end alley, constructing these scenes one by one into portraits of her own imagined properties.
