How do we discover happiness in a world that is always in flux? Can magical thinking help us regain a sense of stability in a chaotic reality? Artists Bas Kosters and Aleks Bokova have joined forces to explore this theme. Their collaboration led to the mixed-media installation OOBOO – the chase for good fortune, which centers around the symbolic pursuit of luck.
OOBOO is a digital world where a fantastical journey unfolds in pursuit of SCHSSS—referred to as “luck” by its inhabitants. SCHSSS is a good fortune and a joyful existence—it is what everybody in OOBOO world is after. The story follows Ooophe, a curious egg on a quest for SCHSSS. Their adventure takes them through imaginary landscapes and past mythical creatures, with Ooophe continually adapting to what they encounter. Ultimately, this exciting journey leads them to a temple-like tower, representing the ultimate fortune.
Amid a world shaped by crisis and uncertainty, OOBOO explores how magical thinking and superstition can grant a sense of agency, offering comfort against the chaos of modern life, but can also reflect on traditions from the past. OOBOO’s immersive scenery is complemented by various textile artworks, including a series of fabric dolls and experimental seating elements.
The collaboration between the two artists came about due to Bas’s desire to re-envision his physical world in a digital environment, enabled by the Stimuleringsfonds Bouwen aan talent. Alongside Rotterdam’s 3D artist Aleks Bokova they undertook extensive research into materials that are particularly challenging to recreate in the physical world, and discovered ways to transform these into digital sculptures. With their toy-like and synthetic qualities, the artworks take viewers into a parallel universe where reality feels both tangible and alien.
