(NL) De bekroonde Argentijnse film- en theaterregisseuse Lola Arias giet verhalen van ex-gevangenen in een musicalvorm. In 2022 en 2023 draaide Arias de film REAS in een voormalige gevangenis in Buenos Aires. Veertien ex-gedetineerden - allemaal vrouw, en sommigen ook trans - reconstrueerden daarin al zingend en dansend scènes uit hun verleden. Nu brengt Arias zes protagonisten uit de film opnieuw samen voor de voorstelling Jail Rock. De afgelopen vijf jaar is de bevolking in de vrouwengevangenissen van Buenos Aires verdubbeld. De meesten van hen werden veroordeeld voor drugstrafiek: slachtoffers van criminele bendes die vrouwen met een laag inkomen viseren. In een mix van theater, (live) filmbeelden, dans en muziek brengt Arias hun verhalen, dromen en mislukkingen op de scène, zonder hen te stigmatiseren. Hoe een leven te herleven als fictie, in de hoop een andere toekomst uit te vinden? In 2024 werd Lola Arias onderscheiden met de International Ibsen Award, een van de meest prestigieuze theaterprijzen ter wereld.

(EN) Award-winning Argentinian film and theatre director Lola Arias pours stories from ex-prisoners into a musical mould. In 2022 and 2023, Arias shot the film REAS in a former prison in Buenos Aires. In it, fourteen ex-prisoners - all women, and some also trans - reconstructed singing and dancing scenes from their past. Now Arias brings together six protagonists from the film again for the performance Jail Rock. The population in Buenos Aires women's prisons has doubled in the past five years. Most of these women were convicted of drug trafficking: victims of criminal gangs targeting low-income women. In a mix of theatre, (live) film footage, dance and music, Arias stages their stories, dreams and failures, without stigmatising them. How do you recreate a life as fiction, in the hope of inventing a different future? In 2024, Lola Arias was awarded the International Ibsen Award, one of the most prestigious theatre awards in the world.
