What’s the theme?

From ‘Small Great Things‘ by Jodi Picoult: “We all do it, you know, distract ourselves from noticing how time’s passing. We throw ourselves into our jobs. We focus on keeping the blight off our tomato plants. We fill up our gas tanks and top off our Metro cards and do the grocery shopping so that the weeks look the same on the surface. One day you realise there is less of your life left than what you’ve already lived. When this realisation hits, you start doing the math. How much time do I have left? How much can I fit into that small space? Some of us let this realisation guide us, I guess. We book trips to Tibet, we learn how to sculpt, we skydive. We try to pretend it’s not almost over. But some of us just fill up the gas tanks and top off our Metro cards and do the grocery shopping, because if you only see the path that’s right ahead of you, you don’t obsess over when the cliff might drop off.”

We have these doubts pretty often and sometimes even regarding our entire course of life. One day, we realise there might be less of our life left than what we've already lived, a midlife crisis. “How much time do I have left? How much can I fit into that small space?” Our response to these questions varied dramatically through history: 17th-century still-life paintings reminded us of our impermanence to take moral action, and today we book trips to Tibet, learn skydiving, or purchase a new fancy diversion.

Inside of a social midlife crisis, the exhibition ‘The Right Pathway‘ searches for artists who look right to the face of the end of the world.

All shortlisted artists TBA!

The Boho Gallery space is a hair salon basement in Deptford which has a culturally diverse community, reflected in the variety of geographies, media and artists represented by its galleries. Ever since an ambitious group of art students from Goldsmiths college in New Cross staged a makeshift show called Freeze in 1988, Deptford has been a landmark on the London art map. Some art organisations in the area specialise in art from South Asia and the diaspora, while others focus on performance and digital art. Institutions such as Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art and the South London Gallery in nearby Camberwell are an additional lure. Meanwhile, Lewisham is London’s borough of culture in 2022. The art world has a tendency to latch onto “the next big thing”, and the nurturing spirit emerging in Deptford is indicative of a new, fairer way of doing business post-pandemic. It really does feel like the art radar is turning to Deptford and with the new East London line extension, many more people can reach it.
