Kick those Monday blues to the curb at Social Sanctuary – your weekly night of free live music at NSC. We've lined up a stellar roster of your fave local artists and some exciting new talents breezing through town!
This week is a Collective Artists takeover, with Tia Gostelow, Mika James + Ellis King are stopping by for a show.
For Yuwi-based indie powerhouse Tia Gostelow, the concept of new beginnings is not unfamiliar, with personal growth and internal development a recurring narrative within her soul-soothing brand of vibrant pop. Inspired to play music at age eight after seeing Taylor Swift live, Gostelow was just 16 when her debut single, 2016’s “State of Art”, won Triple J’s inaugural Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative. Tia’s fearless approach to songwriting has seen her soar from strength to strength since arriving on the scene, earning acclaim from industry tastemakers nationwide for her ability to craft epic pop constructs to sing ‘n’ dance to. The journey from talented teenage singer-songwriter into the confident, award-winning artist of today has been enjoyed by fans and critics alike.
Mika James is leaping out from behind the drumkit of Melbourne punk outfit The Vovos to unleash a modern nostalgic solo outing. James’ musical output swerves from cinematic country to punk-infused blues – her music heaves with intent. Singing, writing and performing songs that invite the listener into a world of personal poetry and intimate portraits, Mika James weaves melodious tunes sharpened with an edge of life experience. The tunes evoke the raw musical landscape populated by Weyes Blood, Sharon Van Etten and Laura Marling - even harking back to the world-building odes of Patti Smith,PJ Harvey and Bobbie Gentry. Indicative of the Endeavor to pinpoint the project’s musical genre, James’s live show exudes a wildness that can’t be boxed. The amalgamation of her punk roots and folk voice has been personified in most recent packed live shows with the likes of Alex Lahey, Bones & Jones, Alice Skye and The Slingers.
Newcomer Ellis King takes influence from a modern generation of singer- songwriters (Phoebe Bridgers, Holly Humberstone, Gracie Abrams), packing her music with compelling melodies, deceptively intricate arrangements and lyrics that pull no punches. King’s voice too is a dynamic instrument - crackling with emotion and simmering with drama. Her songs speak up and speak out. Stinging rebukes disguised as personal observations, King pens rich lyrics of
heartbreak and growth. Each song delivered to the listener as though tailor-made for them. Signed globally with the influential Nettwerk Music Group (Passenger, Mallrat, Vacations), King will be heading into the studio with respected producer Steph Marziano (Hayley Williams, Radiohead, Kasabian) with an EP expected late 2023. On the live front, King has been honing her craft on stage, supporting the likes of Husky and Kaitlin Keegan. More gigs are coming up as she opens for Reb Fountain. Born in Tasmania, multi-instrumentalist King began developing her songwriting craft from a young age. Settling in Melbourne and submerging herself in a music industry education, she decided to enter the fray and pursue a career as a professional musician. Armed with an accomplished catalogue of intimate songs, King is up for the challenge.
