A series of three creative upcycling workshops - Sundays: 26/05-02/06-09/06
About this Event

'Duurzame Expressie' is an initiative inspired by the shared passion of shapes and materials of Isabelle Le Tutour, a visual artist, and Isabel Wolfs, a fashion designer. Our mission is to raise awareness about upcycling through hands-on workshops, offering youth from Brussels, the opportunity to creatively experiment with various materials and techniques. We aim to demonstrate that with minimal resources or reused materials, surprisingly much can be achieved.

Join our Creative Upcycling Workshop Series

By registering for this event, you're committing to attending all three workshops on following Wednesdays:

1.Sunday 26/05, 1-3 PM: Paper Cut

Location: (Sainctelettesquare 17, 1000 Brussel)

2.Sunday 02/06, 1-3 PM: Textile Object

Location: Vooruitgangstraat 76 1030 Brussel)

3. Sunday 09/06, 1-3 PM: Pimp Your Garment

Location: (Vooruitgangstraat 76 1030 Brussel)

The workshops:

1.Paper Cut

During the first workshop 'Paper cut' we will work on a collage using collected paper, magazines, gift paper, coloured paper and more. We will work with scissors and paper to create our own compositions, inspired by the streets of Brussels.

How do images or colours enhance each other?

Can I combine one picture with another?

Can I make double layers to create extra dimensions (3D)?

How does perspective work?

During this workshop we will try to be creative with both found and existing shapes, working with typography is also possible. This way of working with shapes is in preparation for the next workshop where we will apply these shapes to textiles to create even more depth.

2.Textile object

Building on the design from the first workshop, we will learn to create a visual work using textile scraps. Here we develop the ability to transform a design into tangible textile art.

During this workshop we will be introduced to different techniques and types of textiles. We will start with a piece of A3 fabric, which we will eventually choose to make into a banner, double stitch into a tote bag or use as a visual piece.

3.Pimp your garment

In the final workshop, we will apply knowledge gained in the previous two sessions. We will learn how to restore a garment, e.g. denim, in an artisanal way by cutting shapes out of different types of textile or leather scraps. Using 'patchwork' and 'visible mending' we attach these shapes to the damaged part of the garment.

There is freedom to choose the shapes ourselves which allows the visual techniques we have learnt to be expressed in a personal way. In this way we add personality to our work and make each piece tell a unique story. In this way we discover the value of products and give them a new identity without using new raw materials.

Collaboration

This project is made possible by À Fonds, Sew For Life and Saintklet.

Sew For Life will take up its permanent residence in TRACK. Led by Ftouma Laayoune, there will be both weekly sewing workshops and language classes. As part of a shared workspace, Sew For Life also wants to create an environment where often isolated women can meet new people and encourage interaction between newcomers and established Brussels residents. In this way, the project hopes to support and accelerate the economic independence of these women once their legal status is in place.

Saintklet is a multidisciplinary collaborative space, launched by Mentality together with Huis Van De Mens, dedicated to music and art in all their alternative forms. Through a wide range of cultural activities including nightlife, concerts, workshops and more, Saintklet aims to become a place where values like creativity, open-mindness, and cultural diversity can meet and unite.
