#waybackwednesday 104 years ago this month Benton Mackaye a naturalist, outdoorsman, employee of the U.S. Forestry Service, and community planner, was the first to propose the establishment of the Appalachian Trail. His October 1921 article, “An Appalachian Trail: A Project in Regional Planning”, argued for its creation to promote healthy living, farming, employment and recreation for everyday people. In March 1925 the Appalachian Trail Conservancy was established, creating an entity for scouting, construction, upkeep, governance, and advocacy for the Trail.
