Η έκθεση φωτίζει για πρώτη φορά ένα πολύτιμο και άγνωστο έως σήμερα αρχείο του Χριστόφορου Σάββα (1924-1968), του καλλιτέχνη που άνοιξε νέους δρόμους στη Σύγχρονη Κυπριακή Τέχνη και συνέδεσε την καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία του τόπου με τα μεγάλα ρεύματα του διεθνούς εικαστικού γίγνεσθαι.
Η ανακάλυψη του αρχείου υπήρξε αποτέλεσμα συγκυριών, δεσμών φιλίας και πράξεων συμφιλίωσης.
Στα τέλη του 2020 η Ελένη Σ. Νικήτα, η πρώτη επιμελήτρια της Κυπριακής Συλλογής της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης, συναντήθηκε με τον συλλέκτη Χαράλαμπο Σεργίου για να δει έναν χαρτοφύλακα έργων που του είχε δωρίσει ένας Τουρκοκύπριος φίλος του. Το δώρο αυτό, μια πράξη επιστροφής και συμφιλίωσης, αποδείχθηκε πως ήταν τμήμα ενός πολύ μεγαλύτερου αρχείου που περιελάμβανε εκατοντάδες έργα και αντικείμενα του Σάββα, χρονολογημένα από το 1946 έως το 1968.
Το αρχείο προέρχεται από τη φιλία και τη συνεργασία του Σάββα με τον πατέρα του Τουρκοκύπριου δωρητή, γνωστό συλλέκτη και πελάτη του καλλιτέχνη. Η ιστορία τους αποκαλύπτει ένα συγκινητικό κεφάλαιο της νεότερης ιστορίας της Κύπρου, εκεί όπου η τέχνη υπερβαίνει διαχωριστικές γραμμές και λειτουργεί ως γέφυρα επικοινωνίας.
Η συστηματική μελέτη και ταξινόμηση του αρχείου ξεκίνησε το 2021 από τη Λεβέντειο Πινακοθήκη, υπό την άρτια επιστημονική καθοδήγηση της Ελένης Σ. Νικήτα. Δυστυχώς, δεν πρόλαβε να δει την ολοκλήρωση της έκδοσης και της έκθεσης, καθώς έφυγε από τη ζωή το 2024, αφήνοντας ένα δυσαναπλήρωτο κενό. Η έκθεση αυτή αφιερώνεται στη μνήμη της και αποτελεί φόρο τιμής στο πλούσιο επιστημονικό της έργο, αλλά και στη μοναδική της συμβολή ως προς την κατανόηση και την ανάδειξη της σύγχρονης κυπριακής τέχνης.
Ο Χριστόφορος Σάββα υπήρξε καλλιτέχνης-φαινόμενο, που με το πρωτοποριακό του έργο ξεπέρασε τις παραδοσιακές φόρμες της πρώτης γενιάς Κυπρίων ζωγράφων και αποτέλεσε συνδετικό κρίκο με τις νεότερες γενιές δημιουργών. Μέσα από τη έκθεση, το κοινό θα έχει την ευκαιρία να ανακαλύψει έργα, σχέδια, φωτογραφίες και σημειώσεις του καλλιτέχνη που έρχονται στο φως για πρώτη φορά, αποκαλύπτοντας τις «απλές», «περίπλοκες» και «αόρατες» πτυχές της δημιουργίας του.
Εκατό και πλέον χρόνια από τη γέννησή του, με την έκθεση αυτήν, η Λεβέντειος Πινακοθήκη τιμά τον Χριστόφορο Σάββα και συνεχίζει με συνέπεια την αποστολή της να προβάλλει και να μελετά τη σύγχρονη κυπριακή τέχνη, προσφέροντας στο κοινό τη δυνατότητα να ανακαλύψει ξανά έναν καλλιτέχνη που σημάδεψε την εποχή του.

New Temporary Exhibition at the A. G. Leventis Gallery
'Christoforos Savva:
Simple – Complicated – Invisible: An Unknown Archive'

The exhibition presents for the first time a recently discovered and previously unknown archive of Christoforos Savva (1924-1968), one of the pioneering figures in Modern Cypriot Art. The archive, which includes artworks, sketches, studies, photographs and personal notes, sheds new light on the artist’s creative process and reveals hidden aspects of his oeuvre.
The story of its discovery is as remarkable as the archive itself.
In 2020 Eleni S. Nikita, the first curator of the Cyprus Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, was introduced by the collector Charalambos Sergiou to a portfolio of works. It had been entrusted to him by a Turkish–Cypriot friend as a gesture of reconciliation and remembrance. What was thought to be a small gift soon revealed itself to be part of a much larger and invaluable archive of Savva’s work, dating from 1946 to 1968, a testimony to enduring friendships that transcended political and communal divides.
The archive originates from the friendship and collaboration of Savvas with the father of the Turkish Cypriot donor, a well–known collector and client of the artist. Their story reveals a moving chapter in the modern history of Cyprus, where art transcends dividing lines and serves as a bridge of communication.
Between 2021 and 2024 the archive was studied and catalogued under the guidance of Eleni S. Nikita, whose deep knowledge and decades–long research made her the leading authority on Modern Cypriot Art and a most valuable collaborator of the A. G. Leventis Gallery. She sadly passed away in 2024, leaving this work as her final legacy. This exhibition is therefore dedicated to her memory, honouring both her invaluable contribution to Cypriot art history and her commitment to the mission of the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
Christoforos Savva was a groundbreaking artist whose work transcended the conventions of the first generation of Cypriot painters and paved the way for the younger generations who followed. Through this exhibition, the public is invited to discover the ‘simple’, the ‘complex’ and the ‘invisible’ dimensions of his art and to revisit the story of a visionary artist who shaped the course of Cypriot Modernism.
More than a hundred years after his birth, with this exhibition the A. G. Leventis Gallery, pays tribute to Christoforos Savva and remains steadfast in its mission to showcase and study modern Cypriot Art, offering the public the opportunity to rediscover an artist who left a lasting mark on his time.
