From July 6 to 12, we expect you back in De Cinema in Antwerp for ZOMER FILM COLLEGE!For seven days we will immerse ourselves in two film historical themes, through fifteen or so lectures by world-renowned critics and academics, Q&As with filmmakers and some twenty screenings of both original 35mm copies and recent digital restorations.

Satyajit Ray (1921-92) ranks undoubtedly among the finest auteurs of the second half of the twentieth century. Deeply involved in every aspect of filmmaking, he explored themes of class, gender, modernity, and tradition across genres, each time inspired by music, visual arts, literature, folklore and philosophy. Rooted in Bengal’s cultural, historical, and regional realities, his work reveals many worlds—intimate, complex, and universally resonant.
This program strand aims to offer a chronological overview of Ray’s career, focussing on several key themes along the way, from his approach to historicism and his bond with local and international literature to his take on female protagonists.
Guest speakers for this program strand are Professor ??????? ???????? (University of Chicago) and Assistant Professor ?????? ??????? (University of Warwick).

Film and the modern idea of adolescence saw the light of day roughly at the same time, and have influenced each other ever since. The ‘discovery’ of adolescence in the late 19th century and the ‘invention’ of the teenager in the early 20th coincided with the formative years of cinema. The idea of youth has been around in film history since at least the jazz age, but the first teen movie boom came in the 1950s, both in Hollywood (e.g. The Wild One) and in art film (e.g. Sommaren med Monika).
This program strand in no way aims to offer a definitive history of teen movies, but rather an idiosyncratic one, which at the same time does try to showcase the diversity (in terms of tone, time, place, …) and richness of the genre.
We’ve invited an internationally renowned filmmaker to collaborate on putting together this program. We’ll reveal who that is due time.

Zeven dagen lang duiken we in twee filmhistorische onderwerpen, aan de hand van een vijftiental lezingen door gerenommeerde critici en academici en zo’n twintig filmvertoningen van zowel originele 35mm-kopieën als recente digitale restauraties.

Satyajit Ray (1921-92) behoort ongetwijfeld tot de beste filmmakers van de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw. Hij was nauw betrokken bij elk aspect van het filmmaken en verkende thema’s als klasse, geslacht, moderniteit en traditie in verschillende genres, telkens geïnspireerd door muziek, beeldende kunst, literatuur, folklore en filosofie. Geworteld in de culturele, historische en regionale realiteit van Bengalen, onthult zijn werk vele werelden — intiem, complex en universeel resonerend.
Dit programma biedt een chronologisch overzicht van Ray’s carrière, waarbij de nadruk ligt op een aantal belangrijke thema’s, van zijn benadering van de geschiedenis en zijn band met lokale en internationale literatuur tot zijn kijk op vrouwelijke hoofdpersonages.

Film en het moderne idee van adolescentie zagen ongeveer tegelijkertijd het levenslicht en hebben elkaar sindsdien beïnvloed. De ‘ontdekking’ van de jongvolwassenheid aan het eind van de 19e eeuw en de ‘uitvinding’ van de tiener aan het begin van de 20e eeuw vielen samen met de beginjaren van de cinema. De tiener als hoofdpersonage bestaat in de filmgeschiedenis al sinds minstens de jazz age, maar de eerste tienerfilm-hausse kwam er in de jaren 1950, zowel in Hollywood (bv. The Wild One) als in de kunstfilm (bv. Sommaren med Monika).
Dit programmaonderdeel wil geenszins een definitieve geschiedenis van tienerfilms presenteren, maar eerder een idiosyncratische selectie maken die zowel de diversiteit (qua toon, tijd, plaats, …) als de rijkdom van het genre illustreert.
We hebben een internationaal gerenommeerde filmmaker uitgenodigd om mee te werken aan de samenstelling van dit programma. We zullen te zijner tijd onthullen wie dat is.
