In 2009, as a result of a passionate interest in Classical and Romantic chamber music, Manon Derome formed the Zoffany Ensemble with several distinguished colleagues who shared her passion for this golden age of chamber music. The ensemble sets out to give performances of many of the greatest works in the chamber music repertoire by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms, alongside music by more neglected composers such as Louise Farrenc, Emilie Mayer, Michael Haydn and Adolphe Blanc. It is a flexible ensemble, with the core string group occasionally being joined by piano or wind instruments to play larger-scale works
The Zoffany Ensemble takes its name from the German-born neoclassical artist and founding member of the Royal Academy, Johann Zoffany (1733 - 1810), whose paintings, as well as portraying eminent artists such as David Garrick, often depicted the nobility in their pursuit of musical entertainment. The ensemble’s patrons live in Strand-on-the-Green, where at one time Zoffany owned several houses including the one now known as Zoffany House. Each Summer, the group holds a mini-festival in Kew, playing at beautiful private houses where chamber music might have been heard some 200 years ago. They have also played at the church where Zoffany’s tomb is to be found.
