Free Zine Workshop & Storytelling Opportunity for trans, gender-expansive, and cis individuals passionate about gender self-determination!
About this Event

This is a free to attend, drop-in style event from 3pm to 6pm on Saturday, March 30. We’re so excited to partner with Steenz, an expert Black queer non-binary zine artist, who will facilitate your zine-making journey. Ishmaiah, a Black Trans organizer, will host our zine show + tell and open mic for anyone who wishes to come and share their experience with gender self-determination, whether through art, poetry, song, or other means of storytelling.

Whether this is your first time dabbling in zine-making or something you’ve been doing for years, you will be in good hands! Zine-making materials will be provided, but feel free to bring any of your own materials as well. There will also be an opportunity for your work to be publicly featured in an upcoming zine collection published by SQSH and STLMA, if you’re interested! Regardless of whether you would like to publish your zine, you’ll be able to take your zines home, share them with friends and family, or do anything else you’d like with them!

From 5:15 to 6:00pm, we’ll be hosting our Gender Self-Determination Show & Tell, where attendees can share what they’ve created while being lovingly held by community. We especially want to uplift Black, brown, disabled, Mad, youth, and working-class trans and gender-expansive humans’ stories of gender self-determination

We also want to note that folks across the gender spectrum deserve gender euphoria and gender self-determination. This event is open to all trans, gender-expansive, and cisgender St. Louisans who care about gender justice and collective liberation! We will center trans stories and the voices of those most impacted by gender-based harm and broken healthcare systems that aren't working for our most marginalized community members.

This is a COVID-cautious space, and masking will be mandatory to participate. Masks will be provided to all attendees, and people who are feeling sick or have been exposed to COVID recently are asked not to attend to protect the safety of our space, especially our disabled comrades.

Because sharing stories of gender self-determination is a sacred and vulnerable act, we want to take extra care to promote people’s physical, mental, and emotional safety. We ask that attendees be in alignment with and uphold the following guidelines and values:

  • All trans and gender-expansive people are sacred and valuable, and deserve to access as much or as little gender-affirming healthcare as they desire.
  • Abortion is gender self-determination.
  • Mental healthcare is gender self-determination.
  • Trans+ people don’t have to “look trans” or “act trans” to simply be trans.
  • Gender-affirming care is life-saving.
  • There is no trans liberation without Black liberation, disability justice, and the abolition of the Pr*son-industrial complex.

We can't wait to see you there!
