Lecture Description *
Bruce Nelson will present on the importance and complexities of the history of Black Dolls in America. The Black Dolls: Beautiful or Grotesque? Exhibit will illuminate the tradition about the character and treatment of America towards African Americans from slavery to current times. A doll has great power on how we see ourselves and how others perceive us. We have an opportunity to create a positive dialogue about race relations with this exhibit as We discuss the dolls names and a mini history origin. Nelson has a collection that consists of over 150 Black dolls that are 20 to 100 years old.
This1 ½ hour presentation consists of what Nelson refers to as the Four Archetypes of Black Dolls and several short films.
