If anyone ever earned the title “Mr. Blue Note,” it was tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. With his smooth tone, soulful phrasing, and effortlessly swinging style, Mobley became a defining voice of the hard bop era, often called the “middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone” for his perfect balance of fire and finesse. In this high-energy concert, award-winning pianist Zach Bartholomew teams with renowned saxophonist Jeff Ellwood in a tribute to Mobley’s classic 1960 Blue Note release, Soul Station, a landmark album hailed as one of the finest of Mobley’s career. The program also features original compositions by Bartholomew, inspired by the album’s bluesy grooves, funky rhythms, and lyrical sophistication.
A must-see evening of hard-swinging jazz that bridges past and present—perfect for fans of straight-ahead, soulful, and timeless sounds.
