Zaatar (Nederlands: tijm) is een uniek kwintet dat de wortels van Makam-muziek combineert met jazzy en klassieke aroma’s. Hun muzikale stijl is net zo divers als het kruid waar hun naam naar verwijst, en biedt een rijke en veelzijdige klank. Met een jazzritmesectie als fundament mengen de warme, aardse tonen van de basklarinet prachtig met de levendige en spannende klank van de viool.
De leden van het ensemble komen uit vijf verschillende landen—Cyprus, België, Turkije, Duitsland en Syrië—en brengen net zulke diverse muzikale achtergronden met zich mee. Sebastian, Baris en Nikolas zijn geschoold in jazz, Anan specialiseert zich in Makam-gebaseerde muziek en Lina brengt haar expertise in westerse klassieke muziek mee.
Ook de instrumentatie is opvallend: Lina speelt basklarinet en B-klarinet, terwijl Anan viool en bassviool bespeelt. Deze experimentele bassviool biedt een groter bereik dan een altviool, waardoor de twee melodie-instrumenten moeiteloos van rol kunnen wisselen binnen het kwintet.
Zaatar verkent de rijke kruispunten van jazz, Oost-Mediterrane volksmuziek en klassieke muziek, verbonden door de grenzeloze mogelijkheden van improvisatie. Hun gedeelde passie voor innovatie drijft hen om zich te verdiepen in complexe muzikale concepten zoals polyritmes, onregelmatige maatsoorten en geavanceerde instrumentale technieken.
De musici ontmoetten elkaar tijdens hun studie aan CODARTS (Conservatorium van Rotterdam). Hun samenwerking bloeide al snel op en leidde tot succesvolle optredens in diverse steden in Nederland. Zaatar werkt momenteel aan hun debuutalbum, dat in de zomer van 2025 zal verschijnen.

Their musical style is as diverse as the spice that inspired their name, offering a rich tapestry of sounds. With a jazz rhythm section as the foundation, the warm, earthy tones of the bass clarinet beautifully complement the vibrant and exciting flavor of the violin.
The ensemble's members hail from five different countries—Cyprus, Belgium, Turkey, Germany, and Syria—bringing equally diverse musical backgrounds. Sebastian, Baris, and Nikolas are trained in jazz, Anan specializes in Makam-based music, and Lina brings expertise in Western classical music.
The instrumentation is as distinctive as the group itself: Lina performs on bass clarinet and B-flat clarinet, while Anan plays violin and bass violin. This experimental bass violin offers a wider range than a viola, allowing the two melody players to alternate roles seamlessly within the quintet.
Zaatar explores the rich intersection of jazz, Eastern Mediterranean folk, and classical music, united by the boundless possibilities of improvisation. Their shared passion for innovation drives them to delve into complex musical concepts such as polyrhythms, odd meters, and advanced instrumental techniques.
The musicians first met while studying at CODARTS (Conservatory of Rotterdam). Their collaboration quickly flourished, leading to successful performances across the Netherlands. Zaatar is now working on their debut album, set to be released in the summer of 2025.
