ABOUT THE HONOREE:
Dr. Maria Del Rio Hoover is well known as a tireless advocate for the tiniest members of our society. The seed for her passion was planted when she was very young.
Born in Cuba, Maria and her family came to the United States in the early 1960s. An established pediatrician in his homeland, her father eventually became head of pediatrics at a hospital in Savannah, GA, where the family settled. Viewing medicine as a vocation, Maria’s father instilled in her an affinity for children, particularly newborns, and eventually influenced her decision to enter neonatology.
Following a neonatology fellowship in Florida, Maria joined Ascension St. Vincent Evansville (formerly St. Mary’s Hospital) 35 years ago, where her list of accomplishments fill page after page in the hospital’s archives. One of her best-known achievements was her help in creating the St. Vincent Center for Children in 2005, which caters to children with ongoing and debilitating conditions. After decades of serving as a neonatologist, Maria is currently the Medical Director of the Center for Children and Pediatrics Service Line.
Other achievements of note at St. Vincent include Maria’s involvement in the opening of the area’s first Ronald McDonald House and developing a Children’s Bill of Rights to ensure consistent and compassionate care. She continues to be a voice for Southern Indiana in state-level issues relating to the safety and well-being of children. She is the recipient of many honors and accolades, including the Indiana Torchbearer Award, the Ascension Health Living the Mission and Values Award, and the Rotary Club of Evansville Civic Award. Maria was named one of YWCA’s 100 Years, 100 Women honorees at YWCA Evansville’s centennial celebration.
Described by a peer as a “pioneering woman,” Maria is equally engaged in community service. The roster of organizations she has impacted is long and varied. YWCA, Junior League of Evansville, Vanderburgh County Health Department, Youth Resources, and Indiana Advocates for Children are just a few.
The work of Dr. Del Rio Hoover continues today as she tirelessly advocates for others through her professional and volunteer endeavors. We salute this extraordinary woman and are proud to celebrate her accomplishments as our 2024 Tribute to Achievement honoree.
