About this Event
Yule Ball: A fundraiser for Camp HeartWings
Come join us for a magical evening at the New Orleans Ph*rm*cy Museum for the Yule Ball! This enchanting event will feature music, dancing, witchcraft, tomfoolery, and delicious food, all for a great cause. All proceeds will go towards supporting Camp HeartWings, a magical summer camp for young witches, wizards, and wixen ages 6-13.
We are a magical camp born in New Orleans in 2005, and rooted in Unitarian Universalist values. Formerly known as Hogwarts Camp, we are in our third year as HeartWings, joyfully hosted by First Grace United Methodist Church.
Scholarships are abundantly available; no one is turned away from camp for inability to pay. Your generous contributions make it possible for us to continue in this practice.
During camp, we create magical spaces both indoors and out. We use air purifiers in our indoor space, and require masks to be worn indoors as Covid prevention measures.
More About What We Do & Why
We began our journey as Hogwarts Camp in 2005 as part of the religious education program of First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans, because we saw our values reflected in the core values of the Harry Potter books, chiefly the idea that every person has inherent worth and deserves acceptance and respect, that injustice must be confronted, and that love is a powerful, world-changing force... and also, because camp is fun! We firmly believe in fun. We hope that each camper can come away from camp with a sense that they are part of a community that accepts and celebrates them for who they are, and in which no one is excluded from the fun.
We believe in continuous growth and accountable self-reflection. In that spirit, Hogwarts Camp has become Camp HeartWings, as we take flight into new adventures! Over the past few years, as author JK Rowling has continued to make hateful statements about transgender people, we have heard a call from the trans and nonbinary members of our community to take steps to not only be more inclusive and welcoming, but to make our position clear. We hope that by renaming ourselves, we can send a strong message that we are in solidarity with transgender people, and will continue to lift our voices as a community that welcomes, accepts, and celebrates people of all races, classes, ethnicities, faiths, abilities, orientations, and gender identities.
Camp is for young wizards, witches, & wixen ages 6-13, and also includes a youth leadership program for teenagers, and a squad of caring adult staff members.
Camp begins with the gathering of basic Magic Supplies and the sorting ceremony for new campers, and finishes with the End of Term Feast. Subjects offered may include: Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Potions, Shapeshifting, Divination, Transfiguration, History of Magic, Quidditch, Muggle Studies, Wizard Rock, and more...
Our lessons encourage the use of imagination as well as critical thinking, as we create, build, dream, play, ask questions, and watch things grow. We strive to weave anti-racist and counter-oppressive practices into everything we do, and to foster a truly liberated space.
