About this Event

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training


Youth Mental Health First Aid is a FREE 8 hour training designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to support children and adolescents who are experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or are in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults (18+ required) who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.


Curriculum Highlights

Identify common mental health challenges for youth including anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders, and eating disorders.

Review typical adolescent development

Use a 5-step action plan to recognize symptoms, to offer and provide initial help, and to guide a person to the appropriate treatments and other supportive help.

Dispel myths about mental illness and understand the prevalence of mental illness.


What to bring

• a lunch or snack – more lunch info is below

• water bottle – all water fountains and sinks in building have filtered water

• sweater – if you tend to get cold

Parking

• please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to secure parking

• there is a charge for all downtown public parking options within walking distance of the duPont Center; the building does not have a dedicated parking lot or garage

• the most convenient option is the LAZ Parking Florida Theater Lot – just across Ocean Street from the building. The charge is $7 for the day. An automated pay station accepts credit cards. (see photo below)

• the Social Responsibility department cannot reimburse for parking

Building Entry & COVID Considerations

• the front doors will be locked; please ring the bell and announce that you are here for MHFA

• please have your mask on when you enter the building (and leave it on for the duration of the training)

• please take your temperature at the hands-free standing temperature gauge as you enter the building

• please mark the sign-in sheet at the front desk

• please maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from the trainers and other participants throughout the training

Lunch

• the lower level (basement) of the building has drinks and snacks for purchase (healthier option vending machine takes credit/debit card)

• there is a kitchen attached to the training room with an ice machine, a refrigerator and a microwave. You are welcome to use them. Please use the sanitizing wipes provided to wipe down the counter, faucet, microwave, and refrigerator after.

• there are several downtown lunch options within walking distance (Jimmy Johns, Burrito Gallery, Chamblins’ Uptown). Food trucks are open in James Weldon Johnson Park (formerly Hemming Park), just a couple blocks away.

• the building lobby has socially-distanced tables and chairs; you are welcome to eat or break there – again, please use the sanitizing wipes provided to wipe down the chair top and the table after you finish
