Youth Mental Health & The Role of Good Governance
On August 29th, youth leader Rehan Mazid, 15, will lead a civic panel in Waterloo Regional Council Chambers titled ‘Youth Mental Health & The Role of Good Governance.’ The event brings together Members of Parliament and Provincial Legislature to hear directly from youth, be held accountable, share their next steps forward, and listen to youth as consultants in one of Canada’s most urgent challenges: the mental health crisis young people face.
The panel, fully funded by the Waterloo Region’s Children and Youth Planning Table (CYPT), marks a rare youth-led initiative. Panelists include MP Bardish Chagger, MP Matthew Strauss, MP Kelly DeRidder, MPP Aislinn Clancy, MPP Jess Dixon, and Regional Councillor Colleen James.
Mazid recently sent an open letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, calling for the restoration of Canada’s federal ministry of mental health and addictions along with the implementation of a national strategy focused on proactive care.
The panel will begin at 2:00pm at Waterloo Regional Council Chambers at 150 Frederick Street, Kitchener, and will end at 4:00pm. This event is open to the public. Media attendance is welcome and encouraged. Alongside this, a live stream will be provided.
