Your Body is Not the Problem: Challenging Diet Culture and Reclaiming Yourself

Join us at The Generalist Store in downtown Johnson City for free monthly wellness events the 1st Wednesday of every month.

We are so excited to bring “Rooted” a series of monthly wellness collaborations to the downtown community that we hope will continue into the months and years to come. Featuring local holistic health providers as our guest speakers on different wellness topics each month, Q&As, information about local services and resources, wellness givewaways, and more!

Our lunch at this event will be sponsored by Summit Counseling Services, and will include food offerings from Groovy Grover's! There will be a giveaway from Piere's Marketplace.

Emily Key, LPC-MHSP, a counselor at Summit Counseling Services, argues that diet culture is a system designed to control us. How much of your mental and physical energy do you spend fighting with your body and appetite each day? How many "shoulds" do you have about exercise, appearance, and food? How many times do you end the day with feelings of guilt and failure? Too many of us have sacrificed or are sacrificing our joy, vitality, and mental health for the sake of fitting our bodies into a certain mold. This is not because we're weak or damaged. It's because we have been shaped by the pervasive and insidious impacts of diet/wellness culture.

Diet/wellness culture manipulates us into thinking we are the problem getting in the way of obtaining our "ideal" body. It presents a biologically unrealistic, if not impossible, feat as something easily accomplished with the right plan, coach, or amount of dedication. It gaslights us into feeling broken with food and ashamed for the body we are in. With some new information, good support, and a lot of courage, we can learn to identify and challenge this toxic culture as we move toward reclaiming our whole selves and our most abundant lives.

Event is limited to 40 people. RSVP by Friday, August 2nd.
