About this Event
The SASO Annual Conference is Scotland's main criminal justice conference with a long held history of attracting outstanding speakers from both the UK and overseas. Those who attend the conference come from throughout Scotland and the UK and from all disciplines and professions involved in the criminal justice system - judges, sheriffs, social workers, the NHS, thepolice, prosecutors, solicitors, advocates, JPs, central and local government, the volunatry sector, academics, Children's Hearing members and individuals. At this unique conference, all professionals have the opportunity to meet informally to share best practice, exchange views and extend their knowledge of the criminal justice system as whole both locally and nationally.
The 2024 SASO Conference will focus on the theme of Young People & Justice, an important topic following the recent publication of Sheriff David Mackie's report on The Children's Hearings, debate on the definition of a child, extension of the Hearings to 16 and 17 year old people and the successes of the whole system approach. The conference will be chaired by Professor Alexis Jay, Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde and Chair of the Centre for Ecellence for Children's Care and Protection. In 2023/24 Professor Jay chaird a review of Child Criminal Exploitation, sponsored by the charity "Action for Children" and which published a report "Shattered lives, stolen futures".
