A talk on understanding climate distress and young people, in conjunction with the Climate Psychology Alliance.
About this Event

Date: 31st October from 5-7pm

Location: Bob Burgess Building, Lecture Theatre 2, University of Leicester, 5-7pm. Link (le.ac.uk) to campus map.

This free talk is aimed at young adults, 16-28 who are experiencing distress in relation to the climate and ecological emergencies.

Learn more about how our emotional responses to the climate crisis are understandable, and what can help when these feelings feel overwhelming. We will focus particularly on the experiences of young people, drawing upon research and our work with youth in this area.

You will be introduced to the approaches behind a free support group we are planning to offer to young adults in Leicester. The six-session groups will run roughly fortnightly between November 2024 and March 2025.

Speakers:

Gareth Morgan: I am a clinical psychologist and Youth Coordinator for Climate Psychology Alliance. I also work as a clinical tutor on the University’s Clinical Psychology Doctorate training. After working through some of my own overwhelming feelings about the climate emergency, I started aligning my psychology career with supporting others to navigate the difficult emotions we need to engage in to face our planetary emergencies. I am a believer in the importance of collective responses to help reduce feelings of isolation and encourage hope.

Georgie Ramsay: Georgie is a clinical psychologist who trained at Leicester and works for Leicestershire NHS Partnership Trust. Georgie will be co-facilitating the group as a member of Climate Psychology Alliance. Georgie is passionate about supporting non-pathologising understandings of climate distress and recently completed her thesis on understanding activists’ distress through the lens of the Power Threat Meaning Framework, one of the tools we will be utilising in the group.
