Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (1974) is a loving parody of classic horror films. In particular, the Universal Pictures adaptations of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.Gene Wilder stars as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (he insists it’s pronounced “Fronkensteen”). The Doctor is a respected American neurosurgeon desperate to distance himself from his infamous grandfather, Victor Frankenstein.
Frederick inherits his family’s eerie Transylvanian estate. He travels to inspect it and soon discovers his grandfather’s secret laboratory and journals. Despite his initial reluctance, curiosity gets the better of him. With the help of his eccentric assistant Igor (Marty Feldman), the charming Inga (Teri Garr), and the mysterious housekeeper Frau Blücher (Cloris Leachman), Frederick decides to continue his ancestor’s experiments in reanimating the dead.
The result is a hilariously unpredictable creature (played by Peter Boyle). The monster comes to life with a brain that is most definitely not the one intended. Chaos ensues as the creature escapes, the villagers grow suspicious. Frederick tries to prove that his creation is more than just a monster.
Shot in black and white with vintage-style transitions and original lab props from the 1931 Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein (1974) is both a brilliant homage and a riotous comedy. It’s packed with memorable lines, slapstick gags, and a surprising amount of heart.
