Another great opportunity for young adults to gather with peers to explore a natural area while observing the birds interact with the ecosystem around Butte Creek. Butte Creek Canyon is stunning with its Tuscan Volcanic Formations. This is a 2–3-mile intermediate hike along the creek down to the pond. Over 160 species have been documented here. Possible sightings include quail, woodpeckers, Wood Duck, Bald Eagle, sparrows, swallows, and assorted Creekside species. Otters and beavers also frequent the area. You will be hiking in an area affected by the Camp Fire. As we bird, we will explore this fire-adapted landscape and see the vigorous regrowth of the past 5+ years. Wear sturdy shoes/boots and bring plenty of water, snacks, and insect repellent - there will be no water filling stations.
To carpool, we will be meeting at the AltaCal office at 635 Flume St in Chico at 8:30am and departing no later than 8:45am; alternatively you can meet us at the Butte Creek Ecological Preserve at 9:00am. *If you need a ride to the AltaCal office for this trip, please note this when registering and something can be arranged.* To register for this field trip, contact Jared Geiser at [email protected] or (530) 965-1325; please specify if you would like to borrow a pair of binoculars.
