Joyful Spirit Yoga and Meditation ClassesSaturday Mornings beginning February 8th!
**$10 Suggested donation for each class**
Slow Flow Yoga - 9-10 am
This is a gentle class set to inspirational music linking breath and movement in a meditative way that relaxes the mind, rejuvenates the body, and refreshes the spirit. If you can get up and down from the floor with little to no difficulty, this class is for you. Physical limitations and injuries are taken into consideration and modifications are offered for most poses.
Meditation/Contemplation - 10:15-10:45 am
This is a guided course in meditation and contemplation. In the first few weeks the balance will be more time teaching about four different methods of contemplation and meditation, and less time in meditation. The balance will then shift to a minimally-guided practice, exploring a full 30 minutes of each method, and then continue as a minimally-guided practice going forward.
Chair Yoga - 11 am to 12 pm
This is exactly what it sounds like! Yoga practiced with the aid of a chair set to inspirational music and linking breath and movement. It is a very accessible form of yoga requiring few modifications for most students.
Questions and Answers
Why are you offering these classes? Who is teaching them?
Serving our community means nourishing all parts of ourselves. Yoga and meditation are an opportunity to stretch and strengthen your mind, body, and spirit. They are proven to lower stress and reduce anxiety, improve flexibility and joint mobility, and strengthen muscles and bones.
Pastor Rachel Kain is a certified yoga teacher who has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and is well versed in anatomy, technique, and making yoga and meditation accessible for EVERY BODY.
Q: Is this "Christian Yoga"?
A: While the classes will include Scripture and prayer, they will also include teachings from practitioners of non-Christian traditions. Persons of all faiths or no faith at all are welcome! As the ancient yogis said: "There is no religion in yoga, but there is much yoga in religion."
Q: Do I need to know how to do yoga already?
A: No experience necessary!
Q: Do I need to bring a mat?
A: Bringing your own mat is highly recommended. Five Below sells inexpensive yoga mats. There will be a limited number of mats available to borrow or purchase, especially if you are attending for your first time and do not want to commit.
Q: How do I sign up?
A: Classes will be held on a drop-in basis, but we would love to know if you are coming, so drop us an email at [email protected] or call us at 313-937-3170. By the first week of classes we will have an online sign-up sheet to use going forward.
Q: How many weeks is each session?
A: These classes will not be offered in a limited series, but on an ongoing basis.
Q: What if I have another question that you didn't answer here?
A: You can call the office T-Fr 9am-2pm, or email Pastor Rachel at [email protected]
