After practising yoga for a while, many of us may wonder if there's more to it than what we do on that mat; and of course, there is. During this workshop Emma will give an overview of the Yamas & Niyamas, the first two practices of Yoga as you enjoy a yin yoga posture.
She will briefly talk about one limb of the philosophy, explaining how we can bring it into our daily lives off the mat and prompting you with a question surrounding the topic that you can reflect on for the remaining time you spend in the pose.
This will be a very interesting and mind altering practice, as you get a deep dive into yoga philosophy, how to apply it to modern daily life and how it resonates with you.
The Yamas and Niyamas originate from the very well known text ‘The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali’ they are the first two limbs of the 8 limbs of yoga philosophy. Our physical asana practice is the third limb.
The 8 limbs are-
Yama (moral discipline)
Niyama (observances)
Asana (physical postures)
Pranayama (breathing techniques)
Pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
Dharana (concentration)
Dhyana (absorption or meditation)
Samadhi (enlightenment or bliss)
Whilst you are in the yin yoga postures Emma will talk about the first two limbs. They are the following-
Yamas
Ahimsa (non-harming or non-violence in thought, word and deed)
Satya (truthfulness)
Asteya (non-stealing)
Brahmacharya (celibacy or ‘right use of energy’)
Aparigraha (non-greed or non-hoarding)
Niyamas
Saucha (cleanliness)
Santosha (contentment)
Tapas (discipline, austerity or ‘burning enthusiasm)
Svadhyaya (study of the self and of the texts)
Isvara Pranidhana (surrender to a higher being, or contemplation of a higher power)
We will explore the rest of the limbs as we wind down to prepare for savasana using various breath works, meditations and relaxations.
