Yoga does more than stretch your body-it also influences our nervous system. We have two main parts of this system:
* The sympathetic nervous system, which prepares us for "fight or flight".
*The parasympathetic nervous system, which supports "rest and digest"
Fast, hot or intense movements can activate the sympathetic system, but slower, gentler yoga encourages the parasympathetic system. When this system is engaged it "shakes hands" with the brain, helping create a calmer, more balanced state of mind.
