The Kleshas - Exploring the Elusiveness of Happiness by Deborah Adele
Samantha’s notes on the book:
In Deborah’s own words, this book is “not a scholarly commentary” on the subject of the Kleshas. And that’s what I enjoy about it, it’s very simple to follow and offers easy to digest nuggets on this Yoga philosophy.
So what are the Kleshas? This comes from a Sanskrit word (root being “klish”), which means tormented or afflicted. They can be very insightful for helping us understand the nature of suffering.
Over our life we have developed rigid habits and beliefs about ourselves and the world around us. Gaining insight from the Kleshas as found in the classical Yoga text, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, can help us gain clarity within our own mind and possibly lead to a fuller, happier life.
Here’s the breakdown week to week:
Class 1: Klesha #1 Avidya - Not knowing (ignorant of) who we are
Class 2: Klesha #2 Asmita - Giving definition to who we think we are
Class 3: Klesha #3 Raga - Seeking to feel good
Class 4: Klesha #4 Dvesha - Seeking to avoid feeling bad
Class 5: Klesha #5 Abhinivesha - Fearing death/loss/change
Class 6: The Mind Part 1 including the Yogic understanding of the mind
Class 7: The Mind Part 2 including the functions of the mind
Class 8: The 8 Limbs (from the Yoga Sutras)
Class 9: Practice and Non-attachment
Class 10: Finding Freedom: the peace
