YesterWays at the Monroe County Museum is a free hands-on drop-in activity that focuses on a skill or craft from times past, inspired by our Monroe County history. It's held every Saturday and Sunday at the County Museum from 11 AM to 3 PM. Each month, a different activity is offered, and participants can expect one-on-one instruction from museum staff in a fun, beginner-friendly make-and-take project. Our January YesterWays is inspired by a navy blue wool sweater in our collection (Accession # 72.1.31.1) that was hand knit for the war effort in about 1918, and worn by Erwin Wagner who served with the U.S. Navy in France.
This month we're going to knit our bit! Using the original 1917 American Red Cross instructions, YesterWays participants will learn how to make wristlets, just like so many Americans did over 100 years ago to keep the hands of our servicemen and women warm overseas. This beginner-friendly opportunity will give participants a practical introduction to knitting, including casting on, yarn tensioning, knit & purl stitches, and more! Participants will receive yarn, an instruction sheet, and a complementary pair of knitting needles.
YesterWays is free of charge, generally suitable for ages 8 to 80 (and up!), and there’s no appointment necessary.
