FRIDAY NIGHT 630-930p – in person onlyTurkish/Shabbi Fusion
A blend of Turkish and current Middle Eastern dance trends to a fun upbeat Turkish song “Cakkidi” by Kenan Dogulu. This piece uses a Fedora style hat as a prop. We will combine traditional Turkish technique and gestures with the added fun of a hat to emphasize the saucy nature of this piece. There will be a few hats available to use in class for those who don’t have a Fedora. This workshop is suited for all levels of dance.
SATURDAY – in person and zoom options available, vending all day
1030-1100a, Registration and Open Shopping: Saturday registration and Open Shopping not limited to those attending the workshop. New and previously loved merchandise are available. Cash or checks preferred at vending.
1100- 515p, Saturday Classes
Technique & Combos. We will start with warm ups and technique to support Saturday choreographies.
Veil Choreography. A Flamenco guitar with old world Kamanja, the Arabic Violin, bring a unique blend of sound to this lyrical piece. Add breadth, depth and drama to create this stunning piece. Music is “Oran” by Jesse Cook Featuring Fethi Nadjam. A silk oblong veil will be used. Silk veils will be available for purchase in Vending. This workshop is suited for all levels of dance.
Social (Line) Dances.
Social dances are often performed at weddings and celebrations. They are often performed while holding hands. Learn the basics of these time-honored traditional dances.Yasmina will share her knowledge of:
Debke often performed in the Levantine countries, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria & Jordan (Each country has their own unique Debke footwork pattern.); Iraqi Chaldean “Khigga”; Greek “Syrtos” & Turkish “Halay”; and Israeli “ Mayam, Mayam.” Street shoes are encouraged for these dances as stomping, small hops and bounces are involved in these dances
530-600p, Open Shopping: Open Shopping for the public. New and previously loved merchandise are available. Cash or checks preferred at vending.
630-800p, Hafla with special guest, Yasmina Amal. Hafla is free. Performances start at 645p. Performers must register by Feb 1; all performers must register for at least one workshop day (virtual or in-person attendance). Space is limited to 10 acts.
Friday night class only $50; Saturday classes only $90; both days for $120. Please contact Asiya for payment details. Request registration for hafla non-performers by 16 Feb, performers by 1 Feb.
Because participants can have allergic/asthmatic reactions to scents, and for the comfort of others, please refrain from applying any scented products the day of the event. Mask wearing is currently at the discretion of the participant. Zoom link will be sent to virtual participants the day before the class. Anyone who has signs of COVID, cold or flu is asked to switch to virtual participation. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
