As part of YARMONICS 2025 we're screening 2 films at PrimeYarc:
'We carry the river' (2025) a video by Maud van den Beuken
&
'Pipe Dream' a documentary about Theo Jansen.
_____________
In ‘We carry the river’, water management experts, engineers, artists and citizens of Rotterdam were invited to join a march, collectively carrying the weight of the mud that is being removed from the river on a daily basis.
Land and water are held tightly separated in Western societies, keeping the river in a desired shape for both shipping and flood prevention. In Rotterdam this is 33 million kilos of mud being removed from the river, on a daily basis.
As a polyphonic movement this march claimed space for the mud, the non-binary, the porous, the wetness, in an urban environment - by an attempt to amplify the river’s voice by its physical presence.
This project was commissioned by TENT, in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam.

'Pipe Dream'
For decades, Theo Jansen has toiled on the beaches of the Netherlands in his quest to make his beloved Strandbeests self-sufficient. But what happens when, as the artist pursues his dream to create new life, he starts to feel his own slipping away? We follow Theo's life through the seasons, from the stormy, rainy winter to an idyllic summer on Scheveningen beach. We visit Theo in his sparsely furnished apartment with panoramic views of the Dutch coast and the North Sea. On the beach and in his workshops, he nurtures his animal-like Strandbeests, repairing, fixing, tinkering, and ultimately creating new generations. Featuring several interviews with Theo that are used to narrate the film, we develop an understanding of Theo's drive to create, as well as his fear of death. As he contemplates whether he is the Strandbeests' master or slave, Theo races against the inevitable passing of time and his eventual death. While he may be the Strandbeests' creator, he is not immortal. A journey into Theo's life and philosophy, 'Pipe Dream' explores the relationship between art and artist, creator and animal, master and slave.

Biography - Maud van den Beuken
In her artistic practice Maud van den Beuken (NL / DE) maps and measures the porous spaces between the binaries of land and water. Working closely with scientists, engineers and policy-makers in the fields of physics, watermanagement and cartography, she poetically reflects on Western ways of knowing today’s environment. For the past eight years, she has been specifically engaging with rivers, such as the Kaveri, the Mississippi, the Elbe, the Rhine and the Meuse.
Besides the formal context of the arts, her work primarily manifests itself in public spaces, mapping archives, scientific conferences and universities, through interventions, sculptures, installations, maps, (audio)walks and videos.
