About this Event
Ya Tseen (meaning "to be alive") is a continually evolving musical collaboration guided by Nicholas Galanin/Yeil Ya Tseen. Born into the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (Tlingit), Galanin is L’uknax.ádi (Raven Coho clan). His creative practice is deeply guided by a profound connection to Land and the Lingít cultural continuum.
This new record builds on the foundations of connection and revolutionary love established in his debut, Indian Yard. The album cover—a monoprint created by Galanin based on a photograph of his father in Tlingit regalia—symbolizes the space left for future generations to fill.
The Performance: Expect a genre-bending, interdisciplinary experience. As a fluid collective, Ya Tseen’s new work features a massive array of collaborators, including:
- Portugal. The Man
- Meshell Ndegeocello
- dreamcastmoe
- Pink Siifu
- Sidibe
- ...and many more.
About the Artist: Yeil Ya Tseen/Galanin has been creating music, customary Tlingit carving, and interdisciplinary art for over two decades. His work has been exhibited globally, from the Whitney Biennial to the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. Galanin’s visual and sonic works are interconnected streams of creative flow, each integral to the watershed of work he produces and contributes to.
Come celebrate the persistence of love, the honoring of ancestors, and the incandescent sounds of one of Alaska's most vital creative voices.
