About this Event
XINEMA is excited to welcome visiting artist Charles de Agustin (NYC) for SUNSET SEDUCTION, the Canadian premiere screening of his new feature film presented as a part of SUNSET SEDUCTION:GATHERINGS AGAINST INSTITUTIONAL CAPTURE: a three-part series consisting of a critical discussion, workshop, and screening from February 19-23. These engagements will investigate the tensions between nonprofit, state, and grassroots formations through the lens of cultural institutions in Vancouver, BC and beyond.
SUNSET SEDUCTION (the "Screening"):
Sunday, February 23, 7pm @ 5050 Wales St, Norquay Park Field House
$15 suggested donation, NOTAFLOF
Sunset Seduction (2024) stars a liberal philanthropist yearning for his next fling with radical politics. Written as the Palestine solidarity movement escalated in 2024, the work unfolds in essayistic fragments considering ideas of freedom, violence, and the seductive capture of revolutionary ideology. Sunset Seduction is a personal, conceptual, and activist work that claims a film, contract, and discussion as its materials, together aiming to materialize the particular responsibilities of cultural workers in the global north.
This program will feature a screening of the central 45-minute film, followed by an extended audience discussion that will address reflections on prior series discussion and workshop sessions.
Charles de Agustin makes films that scavenge at the boundaries of institutional critique. Solo and group presentations 2021-25 include Alternative Film/Video (Belgrade), Ann Arbor Film Festival (Michigan), Arts + Literature Laboratory (Madison), Gene Siskel Film Center (Chicago), Kassel Dokfest (Germany), Maysles Documentary Center (New York), Revolutions per Minute Festival (Boston), Saigon Experimental Film Festival (Vietnam), South London Gallery (England), Spectacle (Brooklyn), among others. de Agustin has a BFA from Rutgers University and an MFA from the University of Oxford. He has received grants from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, NYSCA, Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Elephant Trust. charlesdeagustin.com
